Grumble Jones May Scenario GJ147 Sturmgewehrs at Schevenhuette

A rainy, stormy April has finally passed and May 1st brings blue skies and sunshine to Oklahoma. Flooding and tornadoes have preoccupied our news, so very glad to see some blue skies. Spring is my least favorite Oklahoma season. May will soon give way to June and another hot summer in Oklahoma's Green Country.

So far 2025 has been an okay year for ASL. Dan Best and I continue to play weekly (3-4 times) and I had a great time at this year's Kansas City March Madness Tournament. I've notched 45 games for the year with 24 wins and 21 losses. My most recent game And Then There Was One Nation (NTX07) was a very fun scenario with Italians vs. Albanians in an urban fight. Dan's Albanians won in the final Close Combat when he won ambush and infiltrated upstairs. I lost by that much. Super fun game and that's the way we all love an ASL battle to end...with the final CC. It's an indication that both sides were in it to win it until the last. Those are the memorable games that we think about long after the final dice roll. In fairness, we also often remember the total butt whippings we have been dealt with as well. ASL...what can you do...but keep rolling the dice.

By now, you must certainly expect that an Osprey tome was the primary source material for a Grumble Jones scenario...and you'd be correct to do so. My other addiction aside from ASL is Osprey books. I say it often, but it bears repeating that they are for their size and price some of the very best books available for getting great strategic and tactical views of a given battle. They are bursting with great scenario ideas. I generally look to the color plates for my inspiration and this month's scenario comes directly from the final color plate in Huertgen Forest 1944 (1). Great painting of Volksgrenadiers emerging from the woods carrying STG-44's.

On aside, I am always amazed at the number of books out there, and there still so many WWII actions that have not been covered by Osprey. The scope of the Second World War was truly massive.

Before I get to the scenario card image, I was thinking about the volume of new products that has been rolling out lately. I recently received the Starter Kit magazine with a counter sheet and many scenarios. I had just finished clipping all the Ponyri counters. As I clipped the small counter sheet, I felt a momentary sensation of new product fatigue. And this popped into my head again today when I saw that LFT is taking preorders for their the Trials of Task Force Faith. It's hard to keep up and then there's those pesky Grumble Jones scenarios that pop up each month like lost tribbles.

They just keep coming...

As always, these monthly "Basement Quality" Scenarios are offered for fun only and as a thank you to the readers of this blog.

Remember to open pictures in a new window in order to maximize the size.

All Grumble Jones scenarios are available from the ASL Archive website.
