2021 is already at its halfway point...which boggles the mind. The June scenario was completed back in April. I worked ahead while I was unemployed to try and get ahead on my scenario design. I like to incorporate unique moments in my scenarios. Sometimes I'm successful and sometimes not. It's amazing how many scenarios often cover the same engagement. The ASL Archive is such a great resource. You can easily search for all scenarios occurring on the same date. This is a great way to check if you're about to duplicate an action already covered by a better scenario.
So the inspiration for the June scenario came from some reading I did about the Fuehrer Begleit-Brigade commanded by Otto Remer. If you saw the movie Valkyrie, then you might be aware of Otto Remer who was played by the German actor Thomas Kretschmann. In the movie, it's Remer who helps restore Nazi control of Berlin during Stauffenberg's coup attempt. Historically, Remer was a decorated combat veteran of the Gross Deutschland Division. At the time of the July 20th Plot, Remer was in command of the Wacht Battalion in Berlin, which was associated with the Grossdeutschland Division. At any rate, Remer would put down the coup attempt and reap the rewards with promotion and command of the Fuehrer Begleit-Brigade. Remer's men would participate in the Battle of the Bulge and not achieve too much as Remer was out of his depth at that level of command. Remer's postwar years would show him to be a staunch Neo-Nazi and ultimately not a sympathetic character.
Remer's lasting contribution to the Second World War...was pretty awful as he may have prolonged the agony by helping keep the Nazis in power.
A Mickey Mouse Effort deals with an instance where a battery of US 105 Priests were in the middle of a fire support mission, when they became the object of Remer's Fuehrer Begleit-Brigade which was probing into the American positions. Remer's men had already taken some US captives and were using captured American trucks and jeeps, when they discovered the US battery. Lacking any armor support, the German grenadiers attempted to move in close to assault the battery. The battery crews turned their machine guns on the Germans as they continued their fire support mission. Finally, the batteries turned their guns on the exposed grenadiers and sent them reeling. A reinforcing platoon of Stuart tanks would put the remaining Germans to rout.
The name for the scenario is related to the name given the German Kampfgruppe...Mickey...no lie...
This scenario is dedicated to Frank Leitz. After I got laid off, I was not able to create PDF's. Frank graciously offered to pick up the slack and he has been behind the scenes making the PDF's. With my new job, I'll have the PDF conversion capability again. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention Frank and thank him for his assistance. He is representative of the strength and boundless generosity of the ASL Community. Many thanks Frank!
As always these monthly "Basement Quality" Scenarios are offered for fun only and as a thank you to the readers of this blog.
Remember to open pictures in a new window in order to maximize the size.
And as always, these scenarios can be downloaded from The ASL Scenario Archive

Are these scenarios playtested at all? (No offense, just wondering)
ReplyDeleteNope. Dan Best and I do a walk through, but that’s it. These are basement quality scenarios for fun only.
